Oscar De La Renta Designer Information

Born in the Dominican Republic in 1932, Oscar De La Renta became internationally known in the 1960s for dressing Jacqueline Kennedy.  Today he is known particularly for his red carpet gowns and evening wear seen on celebrities and royalty.

Early life and education of Oscar De La Renta

  • De la Renta was born Óscar Arístides Ortiz de la Renta Fiallo in Santo DomingoDominican Republic.
  • At the age of 18, he left the Dominican Republic to study in Spain, where he studied painting.
  • He quickly became interested in the world of fashion design and began sketching for leading Spanish fashion houses.
  • This soon led to an apprenticeship with Spain’s most renowned couturier, Cristóbal Balenciaga.
  •  Later, de la Renta left Spain to join Antonio Castillo as a couture assistant at Lanvin in Paris.
  • De la Renta worked for Arden for two years before he went to work for Jane Derby and launched his own label.
  • When Derby died in August 1965 de la Renta took over the label.
  • From 1993 to 2002, de la Renta designed the haute couture collection for the house of Balmain.
  • In 2006 de la Renta launched his Bridal collection.
  • De la Renta now has the unique honour of designing for a variety of distinguished celebrities.

  • De la Renta’s collections are known for their femininity and elegance.  His trademark look is the nipped waist and billowing skirt.  Think Sarah Jessica Parker.  De la Renta is never shy to use a bit of colour and on the runway one is likely to spot a flash of scarlet or cactus green.  His choice of colours and fabrics only add to the femininity of his designs: bright pretty colours with beautiful quality fabrics.

Present Day

  • Da la Renta’s company has become a family affair as of late. Da la Renta’ s youngest daughter, Eliza Bolen was appointed the position of vice president of the $250 million licensing department and her husband, Alex Bolen, is the company’s new chief executive. After nearly a decade with Da le Renta, Jeffry Aronsson left the company to join LVMH, and Alex Bolen was named the company’s chief executive. Much of the Oscar’s recent works have been strongly influenced by Alex’s arrival in the company. Whilst still maintaining Da la Renta’s classic feminine appeal, the latest collections have taken on a more youthful, fresher approach in order to target a younger female market, much to its success.

I want to make clothes that people will wear, not styles that will make a big splash on the runway.” – Oscar de la Renta
