Lancel Brand Biography

Lancel is a grand Parisian luxury brand for chic and well-designed hand-bags.  The fashion house is based in the 14th Arrondissement, in Paris.

Early beginnings of Lancel

  • Lancel is the ‘brain child’ of Angele Lancel her husband Alphonse Lancel.
  • The French couple first sold cigarettes and accessories for smokers and branded their accessory line “A.Lancel”.

  • Angele and Alphonse Lancel jointly opened the first store in Paris in 1876.
  • During the early-1900s the company produced accessories and cosmetics for women.
  • In 1910, Angele released a bandbag line, called Le Quadrille.
  • The Parisian fashion brand launched the umbrella hand-bag and other innovative designs for women, in 1929.
  • In 1940s, they launched several exclusive hand bag linesLa Mondaine, L’Amoureuse and Le Sac a Malices . The hand-bags were the first bags designed with multiple compartments for letters, airline tickets, lighter and cigarettes. Unbelievably they also had an ashtray compartment.
  • The first soft-sided bag, the Kangourou was launched in 1956. The bag was and still is a unique and classy design, made from nylon canvas, with added outside pockets.
  • The Le Canotier bag, with plaited gold chain, was created in 1960.
  • During the early 1970s, the company faced financial difficulties and was later bought by the Zorbibe brothers.
  • In 1981 a store opened at the Avenue Des Champs-Elysee in Paris.
  • By the year of 1987, the bucket-shaped hand-bag, the Elsa Bag was redesigned and became a hit and best seller, after its reinvention.
  • In 1997, Richemont bought Lancel and developed into the current luxury hand-bag brand, rivalling Louis Vuitton. Louis Vuitton is today’s market leader of fine and luxurious hand-bags.
