Burberry Fashion House Biography

It is a luxury fashion house that was established in 1856 and was founded by Thomas Burberry.

Early Life of Burberry

  • In 1856, founder Thomas opened the his first store at the age of 21.The store was situated in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England.
  • The store mainly concentrated on its outdoor attire and were recognised as a quality brand for their material.
  • After becoming quite popular, the original name Burberry was changed to the “Burberrys of London”, as this is the name people started calling them. Today you can still find this name on older products.
  • In 1911 Burberry became the brand of choice for outdoor attire and the outfitters for Ronald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole.
  •  Other famous explorers such as George Mallory and Ernest Shackleton also endorsed the clothing label, which further strengthened the brand name.
  • After this the War Office commissioned the company to customise their officer’s coat to the needs of Warfare, this officer’s coat later became known as the “trench coat”.
  • After the war, the trench coat became popular with ordinary people and later turned into their trademark item.
  • In 1920 the signature check lining was created and today authenticate a genuine product from the company.
  • In 1998, “Burberrys of London” changed back to the original name of “Burberry“.
  • The fashion house was an independent company until 1955 and was then bought by Great Universal Store (GUS).
  • In 2001 Christopher Bailey became the CEO of the Corporation.

 Trademark

  • In 1901, the company’s Equestrian Knight logo became the official trademark.
  • Their trademark style is the trench coat, also the check lining which is incorporated in every authentic item that is Burberry.
  • The company’s abbreviation is BRBY.

Present Day

  • In 2001 Christopher Bailey became the CEO of the Company and is presently still the acting CEO.
  • The company  ranked 73rd in Interbrand’s “Best Global Brands” in 2014.
  • In 2014, the company Net was estimated at $497.04 million.
  • The company brand name is divided into 3 sub-brands, which is Burberry Prorsum, Burberry London and Burberry Brit.
  • The company today has over 497 stores worldwide and continues to grow.
