History of used clothes shops

It is interesting to learn that shopping for 2nd hand clothes is not a recent phenomenon, but has been around since…, well, the beginning of time. We are not going back to the bartering eras, but we’ll have a brief look at how used clothes shops came about.

Used clothing stores or thrift stores, became popular in the late 1960s, when the Hippies endeavoured to make an anti-fashion statement. Hippies held counter cultural values and did not want to follow main stream fashion styles, wear fashion which looked expensive or new.

Ironically the word Hippie comes from the word hipster, originating from the word hip, which basically means in the American jive slang, currently fashionable, sophisticated and fully up to date. Little did these hip Hippies know that their anti-fashion movement would become most fashionable in later years.

The used clothes stores again gained immense popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, when shopping in second-hand or vintage clothing stores was a meaningful way to protest against sweat shops and the exploitation of third world country workers by some fashion houses and brands, in the production process.

Since the late 2000s, used clothes stores are part and parcel of any European, US and increasingly South African city.

With the economic climate changing in 2008, shopping in used clothes stores is becoming more and more accepted and popular.

Used clothes stores like 2nd Take have many advantages:

  • great for the environment, as we recycle
  • our suppliers get cash back for their items
  • our customers get great used designer brands at bargain prices
  • we offer brands that you can’t find in other South African retail outlets

Buying Fashion from used clothing stores, gives you the opportunity to stand out, by creating your own and unique fashion outfits, which nobody else will have.

One ending remark, second-hand clothing is not the same as vintage clothing. Only new or used clothing items from the 1920s to 20 years to the present are considered Vintage clothing.
