Vera Wang – Designer Information

The exclusive and prominent Vera Wang...

Vera Wang

Vera Wang is a Native American fashion designer, who has spent her life in the fashion front line.

Early Life

Vera Ellen Wang was born June 27 in 1949 in New York City.
Wang enjoyed a comfortable life, growing up on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.
• She attended the elite Chapin School and School of American Ballet.
• She later enrolled herself in Sarah Lawrence College and completed her degree in art history in 1971.
Vera Wang was a talented figure skater, having competed professionally throughout her teen years but after her graduation put aside a skating career and started working at Vogue.

• Her love for fashion started from a young age, drawing her inspiration from her mother and their trips to Paris Couture shows.
• At the age of 23, a year after starting at Vogue, she was promoted to senior fashion editor.
• She held this position for 15 years, before leaving the fashion magazine to go and work for Ralph Lauren as design director for accessories.
• In 1989, Vera Wang married Arthur Becker. She was frustrated with her limited range of design choice for wedding dresses and decided to create her own wedding dress.
• In the following year, she opened her bridal boutique in the upmarket Carlyle Hotel on Madison Avenue in New York.
• The boutique clientele consisted of mainly celebrities and socialites.
• The bridal house initially only offered couture gowns by designers such as Guy Laroche, Arnold Scaasi, Carolina Herrera, and Christian Dior.
Wang eventually launched her own line, which was a collection of streamlined and sophisticated bridal wear.
• In 1994, Wang first got international recognition as a designer when she designed a hand-beaded ensemble for figure skater Nancy Kerrigan at the Olympics.
• Then Vera Wang launched her evening wear collection.
• She also introduced Vera Wang Made to Order collection of couture designs that are exclusively sold at the Manhattan boutique.

Vera Wang designs are best known for their balance of being contemporary with a traditional elegance. She also without a doubt the most prominent designer in bridal wear in America to date.

Present Day

• Today both Vera Wang bridal and evening collections are at over 55 upscale retailers, examples being Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue.
Vera Wang with all her talent and success is considered a high-profile figure in the fashion world, and perhaps the most prominent bridal wear designer in America.
