Tom Ford

Tom Ford is an American fashion designer and film director, who is best known for his turnaround of fashion house Gucci, heading his own label and for directing the Oscar nominated film “A Single Man”.

Early Life

Tom Ford was born on August 27, 1961 in Austin Texas.
• He was raised in the suburbs of Houston, Texas and at the age of 11, Tom and his family moved to Sant Fe, New Mexico.
• Tom attend school at St.Micheal’s High School, then later moved to Santa Fe Preparatory School, and graduated there in 1979.
• At 16 years old, Tom left Santa and enrolled himself at Bard College at Simon’s Rock.
• After a brief time at the college, Tom dropped out, and pursued art history at the New York University.
• A year later, he dropped out of NYU to rather pursuing a career in television.
• Ford was at one time involved in 12 national advertising campaigns, all at once.
• After this he started studying again, this time studying interior architecture at The New School’s famous art and design college, Parsons The New School for Design.
• In his final year at Parson’s, Tom Ford spend a year and half in Paris, working as Intern in Chloe’s Press Office. Although not working directly in the design world Tom was working with clothes, and this is where his love for fashion was triggered.
• After his return from Paris, Tom graduated with a degree in architecture.


• After his graduation, when interviewing for jobs Tom would state he attended the New School’s Parsons division, but never revealed that he graduated with an architecture degree.
• Despite Tom’s lack of experience in fashion, he would call designer Cathy Hardwick every day for a month, in hopes of obtaining a job the designer’s company.
• Hardwick agreed to see Tom, and although reluctant at first, she gave him his chance. Tom Ford worked as Design Assistant for Hardwick for two years.
• In 1988, the young designer moved to Perry Ellis.
• He stayed at Perry Ellis for two years, growing tired of American Fashion.
• After these two years, Tom desired a change. It was his believe, that if he wanted to become a great Fashion Designer, he needed to leave the US.
• Tom soon got his chance, when he received the opportunity to work at Gucci in Europe.
• In 1990, that September, Tom along with his partner, Richard Buckley moved to Milan.
• Initially having being hired for the women’s ready-to-wear collection, Tom’s role at Gucci expanded within six months, he was designing menswear and shoes soon after his arrival.
• In 1992, Tom Ford took over as Design Director of Gucci, heading the brands ready-to-wear, fragrances, image, advertising and store design.
• In 1994, he was promoted to creative director, in his first in the position, he introduced the Halston-style velvet hipsters, skinny satin shirts, and car-finish metallic patent boots.
• By 1995 and 1996, sales at Gucci were up by 90%, because of the strengths of Tom Ford’s collections.
• In 1999, when Gucci had obtained fashion house Yves Saint Laurent YSL, Tom was announced as creative director for that brand as well.
• Even though at the time there was some criticism about the announcement, during his time as creative director at YSL, Tom went on to win many awards including multiple awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
• In 2004, after 15 years, Tom decided to part ways with Gucci, after there had been some disagreement regarding Tom’s artistic control.
• In 2006, Tom launched his own label that consisted of menswear, beauty products, eyewear, and accessories.
• Tom also launched his own film production company, called “Fade to Black”.
• In 2009, he made his film directorial debut with “A Single Man” and went on to win many awards for the film.


Tom Ford has over the years become best known for his menswear collections. The designer himself having won many style awards for his personal style. His also known for having introduced Gucci’s Halston-style velvet hipsters, skinny satin shirts, and car-finish metallic patent boots.

Present Day

• Today Tom Ford still designs for his own label.
• Domenico De Sole acts as Chairman for the Tom Ford label.
• He also has made his mark as film director and has the awards to prove it.
• Today Tom’s importance to the fashion industry is recognized, having turned around two major fashion houses, and heading his own label.
