Jil Sander

  • Jil Sander worked as the fashion editor for a German women’s magazine before becoming a designer and opening her first boutique in 1968. Sander has become known for her clean cut lines and use of delicate fabrics.

Early Life and Education

  • Heidemarie Jiline ‘Jil’ Sander was born in Germany on 27 November 1943.
  • She studied textile design in Krefeld and graduated as a textile engineer in 1963
  • Her very first collection, which was shown in Paris, was a failure.
  • The designs she created did not receive attention in the fashion world until the 1980s.
  • She launched a new men’s collection in the mid-1990s
  • Sander collaborated with Puma in 1993 and launched a successful sneakers collection.

  • A contemporary, somewhat odd, New Look originally intended for women conquering executive positions in the 1980s ,it was that of a precisely cut pantsuit, a slim blouse and a form-fitting coat made of luxurious fabrics in plain grey, beige, blue, black or white.
  • She was listed as one of the fifty best-dressed over 50s by the Guardian in March 2013.
  • Jil Sander enjoyed almost cult-like followings for her fashions that could all be easily coordinated and have always ranged in the top price segment.
  • The signature look is the svelte trouser suit paired with a precise blouse and a fitted coat.
  • This look was created with luxurious but understated fabrics in a range of colours such as grey, beige, blue or black.
  • Sander was known for her delicate fabrics that were used in her designs.

Present Day

  • Prada bought 75% of the company’s shares in 1999.
  • After some conflict arose between Jil Sander and Patrizio Bertelli she resigned as head designer of Prada in 2004.
  •  In 2009, she resurfaced in the industry announcing her joint collaboration with Uniqo of Japan, to create her new line.
  • Jil Sander returned to her brand in February 2012, only days after the then creative director, Raf Simons, was released from his position.

“My fashion sensibility has always been close to clear lines and intelligent cuts.”  –  Jil Sander
