Elie Tahari is an Iranian-American exclusive fashion designer of men’s and women’s wear.


Early Life

  • Elie Tahari was born in 1952 in Jerusalem.
  • He was the middle son of a Persian Jewish couple.
  • After the divorce of his parents, Tahari was sent to an orphanage in Rishon, Lezion.
  • In following years, he spent his time in Kvutzat Schiller and in an Israeli Air Force boarding school in Haifa.
  • In 1971, Elie Tahari relocated to New York, working as an electrician.



  • After this move, Tahari spent his time hunting down work in Manhattan’s Garment District.
  • This is where Elie Tahari learned about the fashion retail industry.
  • He started working as a salesman at a boutique in Greenwich Village.
  • Inspired by the disco era, he designed a couple of flirty dresses, and this was the start of his label.
  • His designs were an immediate success, and this lead to the opening of his first boutique on Madison Avenue in 1974.
  • Eli Tahari, was one of the first designers to have a store on Madison Avenue.
  • At the age 46, he met his future wife, Rory Green and together over the next five years, the two would expand the Eli Tahari brand by tripling the size of the company.
  • By the 1980’s, the fashion industry had started recognizing Tahari as a strong designer and high-profile celebs began wearing his creations.
  • In 1997, Elie Tahari and his business partner, Andrew Rosen founded the Theory fashion brand.
  • In 2003, Tahari parted ways with the brand and sold his share of the company.



Elie Tahari designs are best known for their tailored, modern and upscale office friendly look. During the 80’s, Tahari also become well-known for his take on the tailored suit, which was a design that redefined a decade.


Present Day

  • Today Elie Tahari has 600 stores in the United States, and has an international presence in over 40 countries.
  • He has expanded his brand to menswear and accessories.
  • Today Eli Tahari the brand is worth an estimated $500 million and continues to grow year by year.
