Diane von Furstenberg is a Belgium born-American fashion designer who is best known for her iconic wrap dress.

Early Life

• Diane Simon Michelle Halfin was born on 31st of December 1946 in Brussels,Belgium.
• Diane attended finishing schools in Switzerland, Spain, and England.
• In 1965, she enrolled herself at the University of Madrid.
• In 1966, she then transferred to the University of Geneva, and this is where she met Prince Eduard Egon von Furstenberg. The two quickly fell in love and married.


• As recent Princess Diane von Furstenberg, she interned with Italian Fashion manufacture Angelo Ferretti.
• In 1969, the von Furstenberg’s then moved to New York City.
• In 1970, von Furstenberg presented her debut collection at the Gotham Hotel in New York City.
• At this time Diane did not have much experience in large scale clothing production.
• She then started working with major women’s clothing manufacturers in order to gain some experience.
• After meeting Vogue editor, Diana Vreeland, who enjoyed Diane’s designs, she listed her on the Fashion Calendar for New York Fashion Week.
• In 1972, she opened her own manufacturing company call Diane von Furstenberg DVF.
• By the mid 70’s her clothing became quite popular, especially her dresses, especially her sweater dress called Angela and her famous wrap dress.
Diane von Furstenberg name was now high up in the fashion ranks, her wrap dress had revolutionized American women’s apparel.
• After having sold over 5 million wrap dresses by 1976, she landed herself on the covers of Newsweek and The Wall Street Journal.
• In 1974, she expanded her brand by releasing a cosmetics line and her first fragrance called Tatiana. The fragrance was named after her daughter.
• In 1985, after her divorce the designer moved to Paris, France. She continued to use the family name, but lost her entitlement to the princess title.
• She then founded a French-language publishing house, in addition this she also founded other business such as a cosmetics store and a home-shopping store.
• In 2005, she was honoured when she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA).
• In 2006, she was appointed president of the council, and has held the position ever since.
• In 2014, Forbes listed her as 68th most powerful woman in the world.


Diane von Furstenberg is best known for introducing the wrap dress to the fashion World, the dress had transformed women’s attire. The dress is perfectly versatile, being both a comfortable working dress and an elegant evening garment. Other than for the wrap dress, Diane von Furstenberg is also known for her designs being all about the confident strong minded career women and  women empowerment.

• Today there are over 85 Diane von Furstenberg DVF stores in 70 countries and 45 free-standing stores worldwide.
• The company’s headquarters and flagship boutique are located in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District.
• She is the spokesperson for the Ban Bossy Campaign, who advocates for leadership roles for young girls.
• Today Diane von Furstenberg is seen as one of the world’s most successful fashion designers, the epitome of women empowerment and she acts as role model to all women in the fashion industry.
