Keepin’ it POSH for the 2013 Vodacom Durban July

This weekend was highlighted by “Africa’s greatest horse racing event” the 2013 Vodacom Durban July. 50,000 people in their poshest attire flocked to the Greyville Racecourse in Durban to place their bets and see the finest thoroughbreds compete for the R3.5 million.

The Vodacom Durban July had a drizzly build up but this weekend’s race commenced without delay. The day began with 67 seconds of silence in reverence for Madiba followed by a rendition of the national anthem by Bongani Thembe.S’manga Khumalo riding Heavy Metal made history this year as the first black jockey to win the esteemed Vodacom Durban July. Khumalo’s spirited victory has definitely lit up the sporting news, but what would the Vodacom Durban July be without the jaw dropping designer fashion?

With a theme as trendy as, “Posh? Oh My Gosh!” Fashionistas were challenged to think simplistically and elegantly. 2nd Take drew on inspiration from minimalist icons such as Vera Wang, the original Posh spice herself, Victoria Beckham, and classical Audrey Hepburn. Both men and women pared their look back with clean lines of understated elegance. Black, whites and layers of lace made a statement, with uncluttered architectural designs. Casey Jean’s winning design in the “Durban July Fashion Challenge” featured below hit the head on the definition of POSH.

But with all of this minimalism, we couldn’t forget the most beloved horse race accessory of all, your designer hat! This year’s fashion certainly made a statement and kept it sophisticated.
