Dolce & Gabbana is a high-end fashion couture brand, headed by two creative and talented Italian-born designers: Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana

Early Life of Dolce & Gabbana

  • Domenico Dolce was born on 13 August 1958 in Polizzi Generosa, near Palermo, Sicily. Stefano Gabbana was born in Milan, Italy on 14 November 1962.
  • Domenico was born to a family that owned a clothing store. He dropped out of his Fashion design studies at the Istituto Marangoni, believing he knew everything there was to know, about fashion.
  • Unlike Domenico, Stefano had no background in designing clothes. He studied Graphic design, but later changed his mind to pursue a career in fashion design.
  • By the early 80s, the design duos decided to partner together, and open their own fashion company. As a result spontaneous and sensational brandDolce & Gabbana was born.
  • Dolce & Gabbana has been seen worn by many Hollywood superstars, such as the likes of Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman, Whitney Houston, Isabella Rossellini, Madonna, Beyoncé, and many other celebrities.

Career

  • Domenico and Stefano met in 1980, in Milan working as freelancers for major fashion houses.
  • In 1982 the design duos decided to jointly open their own company in Milan. Although they now had their own company, the pair continued to work as freelancers for other fashion houses.
  • Domenico and Stefano struggled to make their mark in the fashion world. Their first unofficial  clothing line was showcased in Domenico’s apartment in Milan. The models were friends and siblings of the design duo. Thereafter they showcased their talent in a fast food restaurant.
  • Through unconventional methods, the design duo managed to land themselves a spot at the Milan Fashion week in 1984.
  • They made their major break in October 1985 at the New Talent Milan Fashion Week. It was Milano Collezioni (fashion promoter) that invited the pair to the ‘New Talents’ launch.
  • Their first official clothing line was for women, under the label “Real Women” and was showcased at the New Talent Milan Fashion week.
  • It was after this major break through, that they rethought their brand name. And by merging their last names as their brand label – Dolce & Gabbana was born.
  • In 1986 the company launched their first menswear line.
  • In 1989 the D&Co opened their first overseas boutique in Japan.
  • In 1990 Dolce & Gabanna were awarded with the prestigious Woolmark Award. 
  • By the year 1993, Madonna requested the Italian design duo to design 1500 costumes for her world tour – “The Girlie Show”.
  • Stefano and Domenico also published their first book, called “10 Years of Dolce & Gabanna”.
  • The  company’s revenue was reported to have made a turnover of over 400 million euros in 1997.
  • In 1999, the queen of ‘soulful music’ – Whitney Houston also requested the pair to design numerous costumes for her world tour.
  • In the year 2000 the couple bought themselves the Villa Volper palace, which is situated at the centre of Milan.
  • In 2001 they launched their own children collection, called D&G Junior.
  • By the year 2003 the company’s revenue was estimated to the value of 500 million euros. In the same year Stefano and Domenico published their second book called Hollywood.
  • After being lovers for almost 20 years, the design duo publicly announced their breakup of their personal relationship in 2005. They assured their fans that on a professional level the fashion brand would not be affected by their fallout.
  • Since the year 2006 the pair have collaborated with many well recognized brands, such as Motorola, Sony Ericsson, Citroen, Martini…the list is endless.

Present Life

  • In 2010 the company opened another clothing store in Melbourne, Australia. Within the same year Dolce & Gabanna signed a 3 year deal with the Chelsea Football Club to design uniforms for ‘on and off-field’.
  • The pair was asked to design the off-field suits for their Italian National Football Team.
  • Due to their overwhelming loyalty to the “Queen of pop” Madonna, she helped with the advertising of their eye-wear called MDG.
  • Early in 2016, the design duo broke one of the most vivid barrier of fashion and broke into the Muslim market. D&C launched their first traditional and religious attire line. Abaya and hijab are clothes worn by conservative Muslim women.
  • Dolce & Gabbana has also created fashion collections of handbags, shoes, swimwear, underwear, eye-wear, denims and fragrances.
