Celine – Fashion Brand Information

Celine is a French ready-to-wear and leather luxury fashion brand founded by Celine Vipiana.

Career

  • In 1945, Celine Vipiana founded Celine, and was one of the first women to start her own  luxury fashion brand.
  • The brand specialized at the time in made-to-measure Children’s shoes.
  • The first store was opened in Paris, on 52 rue Malte.
  • The brand became quite recognizable by their logo, a red elephant, created by Raymont Peynet.
  • In 1960, the brand took a new direction and started it’s ready-to-wear collection for women.
  • The brand also started to offer, a range of leather goods, such as bags, loafers, gloves and clothing.
  • In 1964, the brand launched its first fragrance, called “Vent Vou”.
  • Here after the brand also launched an accessories collection, which garnered major success.
  • Due to the popularity of the leather goods, Celine, then opened a leather goods factory in Florence.
  • In 1973, Celine Vipiana redid the logo and designed a “C” sulky canvas, linked to the Arc-de-Triomphe.
  • Celine started their expansion internationally, by opening stores in Monte Carlo, Geneva, Hong Kong, Lausanne, Toronto and Beverly.
  • In 1987, Benard Arnault made the choice to buy into the Celine brand.
  • In 1996, the brand was sold to the LVMH group for $540 millon, which was owned by Benard Arnault.
  • The LVMH group gave the brand boost by opening 36 stores in Paris. This shot the brand name straight to fame.
  • In 1997, Celine Vipiana retired as head designer of the brand.
  • The brand then appointed Micheal Kors as creative director and head designer for the women’s ready-to-wear line.
  • Kors brought new life in the brand, with modern feminine designs.
  • In 2004, he parted ways with Celine, to focus on his own brand.
  • In 2005, Roberto Menichetti was appointed creative director.
  • A year later, the brand appointed the Croatian designer Ivana Omazic , who had quite the resumë having worked with Prada, Miu Miu, Jil Sander etc.
  • Sadly the designer only lasted until 2008, another the disappointment for the brand.
  • In 2008, Bernard Arnualt made the announcement that Phoebe Philo would take over as the new creative of Celine.
  • Philo was said to have brought a new touch to the brand, and her designs being described as the “minimal cool trend” by Vogue.
  • In 2010, Philo was the recipient of the Designer of the Year award from the British Fashion council.
  • In 2011, she won the International Designer of the Year award from the Fashion Designers of America, for her work at Celine.

Trademark

  • The Celine brand is best known for their minimalistic style and elegance of their designs. Items the brand are best known for are their trench coat, the trapeze bag and leather goods.

Present Day

  • Today the brand is has over a hundred stores worldwide.
  • Their designs can also be found in department stores such as Barneys, Bergdorf Goodman, Harrods and Galeries Lafayette etc.
  • Celine is today seen as one of the most iconic and recognizable brands, having lasted for all these years and still staying current.
