Michael Kors is an American fashion designer, renowned for his sports-luxe aesthetic and his outrageous extrovert personality.

Early life

Michael Kors was born on the 9 August 1959.
• He was born Karl Anderson but when his mother re-married she gave him the choice seeing as his last name would change, if he wanted he could change his first as well.
• During Kors’ childhood he worked as a model, appearing on multiple television commercials.
• At the age of 14, he gave up on his dream of becoming at actor and started to move into the design world.
• In 1977, he enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.
• Nine month later, he left the institution to follow an opportunity to sell his own fashion designs New York-based shop Lothars.

Career

• While at Lothars Dawn Mello, a former fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman, gave Kors the chance to present a collection to the buyers at Bergdorf Goodman.
• In span of three years, a deal was reached and Michael Kors found his clothing being stocked in all major retail stores in America.
• Some of the stores included Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales.
• In 1984, he presented his first eponymous runway show.
• In 1997, Kors was announce the head designer of LVMH -owned French fashion house Celine.
• After Kors’s turnaround of the brands fortune and public image, he was promoted from designer to creative director of Celine in 1999.
• The LVMH also bought a stake in Michael Kors own business.
• In 1999, he won the CFDA Womenswear Designer of the Year award.
• In 2003, he left the brand to focus all his attention on his own growing empire.
• That year he won yet another CFDA award, this time in the category “Menswear Designer of the Year” for 2003.
• In the same year, Sportswear Holdings Limited acquired an 85% stake in Michael Kors, which meant they bought out the shares previously held by LVMH.
• In 2004, Michael Kors launched his diffusion collection, which was a more affordable line compared to his previous collections.
• Kors went back into the television world, when he played a judge on Project Runway.
• In 2010, he won the Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement award from the CFDA. He was the youngest designer ever to receive this award.
• Kors would go on to win many more accolades for his effort to the fashion industry.
• In 2012, he retired from the hit television show Project Runway, after having been there for five seasons.
• In 2013, the Times listed him in the magazine’s annual list of most influential people.
• In 2014,  Forbes reported that the Michael Kors empire was worth a fortune of $1billion, making him the newest billionaire of the fashion world.

Trademark

• Michael Kors is best known for his sportswear-luxe apparel.
• Kors is also known as the man behind many of Hollywood most memorable looks being favourite amongst celebs such as Jennifer Lopez, Alicia Keys, Gwyneth Paltrow and even First Lady Michelle Obama.

Present Day

• Today Michael Kors clothing can be found in his boutiques in New York, Beverly Hills, Palm Beach and Chicago.
• The Kors empire consists of runway collections, ready-to-wear, footwear, handbags and Jeans.
Michael Kors, who has been in the fashion for almost two decades,has definitely earned his spot among the greats.
