Chloé – Designer Brand Information

Chloé is a French fashion house who has been around for more than 60 decades and continues to be a brand that is one fashions most respected luxury brands.

Early Career

• In 1952, the Chloé brand was founded by Gaby Aghion in Paris, France.
• The brands vision was to develop a luxury pre-a-porter collection (today known as ready-to-wear) that would be a reflection of an haute couture standards. At the time this was very scarce market in fashion.
• She ran the brand, along with her partner, Jacques Lenoir.
• In 1956, the brand presented its first collection at Le Café de Flore, in Paris.
• Gaby Aghion had designed the collection herself.
• As the brand became more popular, Gaby and Jacques decided it was to add additional help. They started to hire young talented designers, some of these designers include Christiana Baily, Tan Guidicelli, Guy Paulin, Carlos Rodriguez etc.
• The brand became one of the first to meet the demand for a ready-to-wear (RTW) collection that were regarded as good as high fashion and couture.
• In 1966, Karl Lagerfeld was appointed as the brands head designer.
• The brand also had quite the clientele, high profilers such as Grace Kelly, Briguette Bardot, and Jackie O, were all popular supporters of the brand.
• In 1971, sees the first Chloé store being opened at the 3 rue Gribeauval in Paris.
• In 1985, the brand was bought out from Gaby by the Richemont Group.
• In the same year, Gaby who has always been at the fore front of the brand retired.
• In the following years, the brand keeps its momentum and continues to work with it’s ‘’A team’’ made up of, Karl Lagerfeld and Martine Sitbon up until 1997.
• In 1997, Stella McCartney joins the brands list of designers, bringing a new feminine, romantic and cheeky feel.

Later Career

• In 2001, Phoebe Philo starts working at Chloé, and adds her personal and sensual touch.
• The brand also launched a second label called ‘’See by Chloe’’
• And gains high profile celebs such Kirsten Dunst, Natalie Portman and Lou Doillon, to the client base.
• In 2002, the brand expands and launches its first range of handbags, small leather goods and shoes.
• In 2006, the brand wanted to go in a more modern and contemporary direction and hired Paulo Melim Andersson.
• In 2008, the brand launches its first fragrance.
• After having closely with Hannah MacGibbon for the launch of the fragrance, the brand names the designer as the Artistic Director at Chloé.
• In 2009, MacGibbon presents her debut runway collection in March for summer-spring 2009.
• In 2011, MacGibbon was replaced by designer Clare Wright.
• In 2012, the annual sponsorship of Prix Chloé at the Festival de Mode de Hyeres started.

 

Trademark

The fashion house today is best known for their luxury handbags and shoes. Though the brand started out as a ready-to-wear brand, over the years it has been their bags and shoes that have been ranked among their most coveted wares. The Paddington bag is the brands most famous it bag.

Present Day

• Today Chloé has a limited amount of exclusive stores worldwide.
• The brand headquarters are situated in Paris.
• Today the brand its divided Into 5 sections, RTW, Accessories, Kids and ‘’See by Chloe’’.
